Pass the thanks: Nurturing an attitude of gratitude at work

The holidays are a good time to stop and take stock of what we’re thankful for, both personally and professionally. The problem is, many of us just don't make time for thanks. “Gratitude” is the manifestation of thanks—or thanks in action. It’s such a powerful, simple thing, yet so seldom expressed, especially in the workplace. In fact, one survey found that people are less likely to express gratitude at work than anyplace else, with 74 percent never or rarely expressing gratitude to their boss.

On the flip side, managers who say "thank you" to their direct reports may find that they feel motivated to work harder. They may also find that their employees are happier people. As psychology professor Sonja Lyubomirsky writes, “Gratitude is an antidote to negative emotions, a neutralizer of envy, hostility, worry, and irritation. It is savoring; it is not taking things for granted; it is present oriented."

Giving "virtual" thanks 

Here at SpatialKey our team is 100 percent remote, so it can be especially challenging to communicate gratitude because we don’t see each other every day. We're deliberate about solving that problem with our Living Our Values (LOVe) instant messaging room. This room is dedicated to recognizing the best of each other and expressing a simple thanks to co-workers over chat.
