“Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” William Arthur Ward
The holidays are a good time to stop and take stock of what we’re thankful for, both personally and professionally. The problem is, many of us just don't make time for thanks. “Gratitude” is the manifestation of thanks—or thanks in action. It’s such a powerful, simple thing, yet so seldom expressed, especially in the workplace. In fact, one survey found that people are less likely to express gratitude at work than anyplace else, with 74 percent never or rarely expressing gratitude to their boss.
On the flip side, managers who say "thank you" to their direct reports may find that they feel motivated to work harder. They may also find that their employees are happier people. As psychology professor Sonja Lyubomirsky writes, “Gratitude is an antidote to negative emotions, a neutralizer of envy, hostility, worry, and irritation. It is savoring; it is not taking things for granted; it is present oriented."
Giving "virtual" thanks
Here at SpatialKey our team is 100 percent remote, so it can be especially challenging to communicate gratitude because we don’t see each other every day. We're deliberate about solving that problem with our Living Our Values (LOVe) instant messaging room. This room is dedicated to recognizing the best of each other and expressing a simple thanks to co-workers over chat.
Here are a few more things we’re thankful for here at SpatialKey
Brandon Purcell, Chief Technology Officer
“There are so many things to be thankful for at SpatialKey. We get to work with so many different technologies and are always pushing the envelope to innovate ahead of our competition while maintaining a strong focus on the user experience. We have team members in five different countries so we have a diverse culture and we encourage everyone to share their experiences, along with photos of their families and pets. More than once I’ve heard a team member say that they feel closer to their team at SpatialKey than they did when working in an office. I am honored to work with such an inspiring group of people!"
Bruce Miller, Director, Product Management
“I am thankful to be working in such a passionate and collaborative industry. I am consistently energized after talking with clients, whether it’s discussing risk management goals, troubleshooting issues, or laughing at our pets. It’s especially gratifying to work with such an incredibly dedicated team at SpatialKey. We’re motivated to ensure client success and have fun doing it!”
Joseline Lajara, Account Manager
"I am grateful to have found a company that places such a great amount of value on culture and collaboration—and who always puts their customers' needs first. These are exactly the values and principles that I follow in my personal life, and therefore, the most amazing part about working at SpatialKey is feeling that I have found my tribe (community)."
Austin Nicholas, Account Executive
“As I take on this new industry, I'm grateful for coworkers like Jon Sonnenschein who has been a mentor to me. His enthusiasm, knowledge, and patience have gone a long way in ensuring that I am adequately prepared to do a great job at SpatialKey. In addition to my work life, I am incredibly grateful to have a wife that loves and supports me, and a healthy daughter that brings unlimited joy to my life on days when I seem to have hit a metaphorical wall."
Kevin Korngut, Front-end Architect
“I am grateful to work at a company where not only am I proud of the work that we do, but also with those I do it. I'm also thankful for the work-life balance provided by SpatialKey and the premium we place on one another's well being."
From all of us at SpatialKey, this holiday season we send our gratitude to you—our partners, clients, and supporters. May you all have a long list of things to be thankful for this year. And, if we’re doing our job right, we hope to be one of them!
