SpatialKey September 2013 Release

We've been busy cooking up some new features and a new application, and they are finally ready to be sampled! One of these is available as a beta release right now; but we didn't want to wait any longer to get the word out, start conversations, and get feedback.

Dashboard templates

Do you import weekly, monthly, or quarterly data and find yourself creating a new dashboard for each dataset? SpatialKey's new Dashboard Templates feature removes the tedium and frustration created by redundant report production processes and let's you get straight to analysis! Now, you can create a dashboard once and reuse it as a template for multiple datasets without having to recreate the dashboard each time.

Within the SpatialKey Analyst applications (Map Analyst and Blank Canvas), you simply select “Save as New Template” from the Save menu to create a template for the dashboard in focus.

You will need to configure a few options as well as provide contextual information that will help you and your colleagues identify it later.

Saved dashboard templates can be launched from the Dashboard tab or can be selected within the Analyst apps.

After selecting a template, choose a dataset to report against. This dataset must include the attributes and metrics that were used to create the template, which are listed in the Data Requirements panel on the left.

If the selected dataset doesn’t meet all Data Requirements, you are presented with the option to “pick a different dataset” or “use it anyways”. If you "use it anyways", some analytic pods may not appear in the dashboard due to insufficient data. For example, if the template requires “Sq Ft” and this attribute is not included in the chosen dataset, the pod(s) reporting Sq Ft will not appear when the dashboard is launched.

That’s all there is to using dashboard templates! These templates help automate report production, so you can immediately interrogate and derive insights from a new data vintage, a derivative dataset, or any other dataset of similar content. If you want to learn more, check out this article.

Hail app

The U.S. has been impacted by several devastating hail outbreaks this year. Our clients require a rich analytic solution to help them understand and respond to these events. As such, we built a flexible and extensible application platform that allows us to integrate hail data from leading content providers!

The SpatialKey Hail application is the latest addition to the SpatialKey Insurance Intelligence solution. In this release, the Hail app integrates data from Weather Decision Technologies (WDT). You may remember the preliminary footprint WDT provided to help our clients respond to the Moore, OK tornado on May 20th (see blog post). The SpatialKey Hail app is purpose-built to help you visualize and derive insights from detailed WDT data, which includes 14 hail size contours ranging from 0.25" to 4.0".

We have made it easy to access and filter a rich library of hail events! Simply, use the calendar tool to select an event date, view the available event reports from the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) at NOAA in the map to the right, then set the desired geographic extent for the analysis.

During the analysis process, each location is enhanced with the the relevant hail sizes that each was subject to. Once complete, the dashboard is launched and you can immediately visualize your impacted exposures in the context of the hail footprints. As with all SpatialKey applications, you can flexibly filter, segment, and visualize hazard data and any attributes within your location dataset to understand and quantify the impact of these events and help mobilize your response.

Our default basemap has been updated to use data from MapBox, a leader in the geo-imagery space. MapBox is committed to delivering continuous innovation and conflates the best data sources into a single solution, mitigating vendor bias. When zoomed out you're looking at data from NASA satellites that MapBox has processed to color correct and remove clouds, which they call their "Cloudless Atlas". When zoomed in you're looking at data from Digital Globe.

With the update in default basemap, we have increased zooming capabilities in SpatialKey by a full zoom level! Here is a quick snapshot of the zoom level available before and after the switch to MapBox.

Marker icons

As an initial step towards providing multiple point visualization options, we have added marker icons. These can be selected as an alternative to traditional plots by selecting "More visual options" for the desired dataset within the Layer Manager.
